Dear Parents, Students and Guardians…
I am excited about continuing to provide leadership as the Principal at Thickwood Heights School and I look forward to working with the staff, students, parents and guardians this year!
The school year came to a sudden end on May 3rd and it has been 4 months since we were last together. Since then, our community has done an excellent job of working on recovery. Supports for our students and their families are already in place and will continue throughout the new school year. If you need information on mental health wellness, please access the many links via the district and school website and twitter, which are helpful, or ask at the main office. We hope that you are well and healthy and had time this summer to be with family and friends during this hard time. So many of us (staff, students, and families) have lost so much, but we will do what the Thickwood Heights school community does and support one another and make this year a successful one!
I toured the school on a regular basis during the summer and observed firsthand the entire restoration process. The school district restoration company did an efficient job cleaning the building and the school is in excellent shape for opening. The library carpet has been removed and the floor repaired, and new carpet has been ordered. We have been through all of the items that were bagged and left in the gym during the restoration process, and items that were either damaged or disposed of will be reordered. During the first week of school, the gym will be open to allow parents and guardians to pick up student materials that were left behind at the end of last school year. Beginning Sept 19th, the school gym floor will be refurbished and resurfaced. We now have a new sound system in both the gym and main office! New improvements to the school facility and resources will continue.
For the first day of school, Tuesday September 6th, our gym is available from 9:00 to 10:00 am (Meet and Greet) for parents to drop by, have a snack and reconnect with each other. A member of Alberta Health Services will be on site for support. Our welcome back assembly is 10:00am on Thursday, September 8th in the gym, and our welcome back BBQ and Grade 6 Farewell are Thursday September 15th 6 to 7 (BBQ) and 7 to 8 (Farewell in the gym). This year we have made an operational schedule change and now have a morning recess from 10:00 to 10:15am and an afternoon recess from 2:15 to 2:30pm. Lunch is 12:20 to 12:45pm and teachers will be eating lunch with their students (teachers have the option to take their students outside at this time if they choose).
All staff in our district understands the situation we were put in at the end of the last school year, and will provide supports for students as needed. The Term 2 report card from last year is the final report card and teachers will endeavor to review areas that were not covered due to evacuation.
Thickwood Heights School is on track for another terrific year, full of classroom learning, Fine Arts activities and events, Robotics, physical education opportunities, field trips and outings, in-school presentations, a focus on building community and school culture, and upon improving student achievement. This year our musical production is Madagascar! We are planning a repeat of many of the fun events and traditions from previous years and much, much more!
Our Welcome Back BBQ is great opportunity to come out and socialize, have some food, and meet our teachers and in particular our new staff members. This year we welcome Amanda Hoblak in Grade 1, Christine Littman in Grade 2 and Kelsey Little in Grade 3 who are covering maternity leaves. We look forward to working together with parents and guardians as part of our educational team to help students complete a successful year at Thickwood Heights School. The Welcome Back BBQ is 6:00 to 7:00 Thursday, September 15th.
Our School Advisory and Parent Councils always need more members. Feel free to join us for our monthly council meetings. Both councils are comprised of the same dedicated few; whose members have families and also work. We also have great need of parents who would be able to commit to helping at our many other school and fundraising events. Parents can and do make a great difference and our students, your children, benefit from your efforts! Our first meeting is September 28th 6 to 8 pm.
We are still accepting new registrations and Elaine is available in the office for assistance.
Thank you to all the families of Thickwood Heights School for all of the support we receive throughout the year and as always, our doors are open for both concerns and compliments!
Let’s work together to make this the best year yet for our students!
